Esperance to Albany

Sunday, 5 June

After a fond farewell to Esperance we were up and away early on the road to Albany, a 481 km drive. We detoured to the coastal hamlet of Hopetoun for morning tea but didn’t find the Devonshire tea we’d been hoping for, although there was a cuppa and a cake at Christine’s Kitchen.

It was a good drive on a mostly cloudy, showery day. There were occasional grand vistas and a lot of low scrubby bush. The only town of any size was Ravensthorpe. Along the way we have seen an occasional tree painted blue, which we learned is a symbol of farmers’ mental health needs.

Our cabin at Big 4 Emu Point is very close to the sea. Once we’d restored ourselves with a cuppa and a biscuit we headed out of the park and onto the beach, where the tide was coming in close to our toes. There was a lovely late afternoon sky, a ship, a yacht and some driftwood. What more could you wish for? We had a bit of a walk along a track beside the beach before it got dark.

It turns out that we are here on a long weekend. Monday is Western Australia Day and Albany is full of visitors. We couldn’t find a restaurant with a vacancy for dinner and ended up at The Squid Shack, located right beside the fishing fleet. They were some of the best fish and chips we’ve ever eaten.

Home to our cosy cabin to watch The Party at the Palace. We’ve loved all the Jubilee celebrations.

  1. Another excellent day of travels. Horrid weather here. So cold. Snow at Marysville.

  3. Long distances to travel over there Heather! Beautiful shot of the lovely beach. Are you going to be able to get to Little Beach? It's 35 km east of Albany (on Two People's Bay, so perfect for you and Judy) but if you have the time it is SO worth the drive. Sometimes when you can't find a restaurant it turns out SO well. Well done!
