Balham

Friday 29 December

It was quite a wet start to the day today so we had a sleep-in and did a bit of washing. The machine is a washer/dryer and the contents come out incredibly wrinkled and a little damp. Fortunately the central heating panel-radiators are great for drying and we’ve all got clean sheets on our beds. Like Lorraine, we don’t love the washer/dryer and would not recommend one.

We eventually left the house and caught the bus to Balham for coffee and Scrabble on the giant Scrabble board at Gazette.

8 Scrabble boards joined together.

Up the road to a very good Sainsbury’s supermarket, where Rob bought a really big salmon. It was his turn to cook dinner. A lady at the bus stop had bought a similar salmon for New Year’s Eve, but hers didn’t jump onto the floor at the checkout.

You’d think he caught it himself!

After a late lunch, Judy and I went down the Streatham High St, Judy looking for a post office and me to try and sort out a problem with the phone I bought. Judy had success with the post office but the phone still doesn’t do what I want.

Rob cooked a superb salmon dinner and we did a surprisingly good job of getting through more than half of it. We listened to Simon and Garfunkel and felt content.

Delicious!

  1. Back at WG so able to see the photos, which take too long using the dongle at the bhouse! Cute London house that is so narrow..as they are. Lovely angels in Regent St. and you really did a job on those glasses if Rob needs someone to make him a new pair. Thank Goodness you were not in Africa!! Great to be able to wander to the High St for coffee or catch a bus to Liberty, despite the prices. Huge salmon. Fish cakes coming up? K x

  2. You all seem to be having a fantastic trip (the famous glasses incident aside...) and the culinary side sounds nearly as good! It's lovely to be able to have a rest when you stay in one place a while, isn't it?
Our Christmas at Nicole's went pretty well, but Boxing Day (& the big start in Sydney) is always more restful.... until the babysitting gig started in the afternoon. Good kids though.
Al & I are going to Harrietville Music Camp next Thursday, so that should be fun. Bright overlaps a couple of days, so our new van will get a good workout!
Happy New Year travellers! D xxx
PS. I really liked the men on the dock painting at the Gallery - beautiful lighting effects.

  3. Another amazing day in your adventure. Not much "adventure" happening here. Sarah came down with a tummy bug (vomiting) on Thursday. I got it last night and heaved up my shoelaces over several hours and pulled a few muscles in the process. Lachie has it on the other end. He soiled his pj's last night and has to get to the toilet very quickly. Tim and Amelia have been (fingers crossed) untouched. Consequently very bland meals happening here. Glad to see you are enjoying such wonderful memories. I'll be missing our NYE "celebrations". Nothing planned here, but knowing these two it will be a last minute thing.

  5. Wishing I'd had the camera ready when the fish slid out of its bag onto the supermarket floor entertaining all of the staff and shoppers! (J)
