Today we said goodbye to the Hotel Presidente and set off on the 400km journey to Trinidad. On the way we stopped at a nature park to see some of the indigenous animals and plants. They had a clever way of raising money for the park - guinea pig roulette. You paid 1 CUC and picked a number. When everyone had their number, which was an indigenous creature, the guinea pig was put in a box, turned a couple of times and then the box was taken off and the guinea pig ran into one of the little numbered houses. None of us won the free drink that was the prize, but it was clever and fun.
Our next brief stop was in Australia! Yes there is a town called Australia. It is sugar cane country and so many towns were given the names of countries that produce sugar.
From there we visited a crocodile park which had some lovely water lilies. Anne was picked to hold the baby croc. We also had lunch here.
Next stop was the very pretty town of Cienfuegos, known for its classical architecture. We walked through the main square which was surrounded by beautiful buildings. We loved the trees with wisteria-like yellow flowers that we have seen everywhere. There was a marble statue of Jose Marti the leader who freed Cuba from the Spanish.
Another hour and a half brought us to Trinidad and our hotel which is perched on top of a hill. Great views. We explore Trinidad tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteAnother good read Heather. It can certainly be an attractive country to look at (i.e. Vinales Valley)...pity about the politics and the daily life of the locals. K
ReplyDeleteEnjoy Trinidad!
ReplyDeleteI saw that town called Australia on a documentary recently. Thanks for keeping us up to date, Heather. Sounds like you're having a great time. :)
