Trinidad to Camaguey

Saturday 4 June

Today our drive brought us to Camaguey with a stop on the way at an old sugar cane plantation. While the blokes were climbing a tower we looked at some beautiful embroidered tablecloths and other linens. The plantation house is now a restaurant with beautiful old chandeliers and solid mahogany furniture. Saw a cane crusher that was operated by slaves.

On to Camaguey, a city that is like a maze of narrow streets on strange angles. Jose had to ask directions a couple of times. Our tour here was on bicycles like tuk-tuks. We visited some pretty squares. One had bronze statues by a local artist, Martha Jiminez. We went into her gallery and loved her work!

Finally got to our hotel which tells us it has wifi but doesn't have the cards. They sent us to a hotel up the street which also didn't have cards. They sent us further on. Anne went and I waited on the corner where I was entertained by a punch up between a couple of guys who had been shouting at each other on and off. When they had been rolling on the ground for a while their friends finally decided to break it up. Anne returned with cards but little hope of them working. And hooray, the best and quickest connection we've had in Cuba.

  1. Expecting you to arrive home with new tablecloths and bronze statues. Love the example in the square!
