Saturday, 12 October
The day did not exactly dawn bright and sunny, quite the opposite in fact. However we were awake early so we got up and drove to Cadillac Mountain before breakfast to miss the crowds. We also missed the view, as the mountain was shrouded in cloud. It would be a pretty amazing sight out over the islands and sea if it were clear.
Back in Bar Harbor (no “u”) we found a breakfast place. It was doing a bustling trade but we were in a booth in no time. Anne had an omelette and I had blueberry pancakes. Blueberries are a Maine specialty and every cafe makes a big deal about them.
Then it was off on a circuit of the Acadia National Park. It costs $30.00 for a day pass to drive in the park and it is notoriously busy. The first half of the drive is along rugged coastline. The road is one way, with 2 lanes and occasional parking areas where there is a good view. In these spots you can also park in the left lane. There are people everywhere, crossing the road, scrambling on rocks, looking for parking spots, posing for photos, setting off on walking trails, queuing for loos, waiting for the shuttle bus, and taking millions of photos, so you have to go slowly and carefully.
Keep forgetting videos must be landscape.

It took a long time to complete the circuit but it was a really lovely drive and once again there were autumn colours the whole way. We had a late lunch in Bar Harbour and then went for a walk down a lane and along the waterfront back into town. The manager of our lunch place told our neighbours about the walk and we overheard and decided to do it too. Fortunately the drizzle had fizzled by then.
A couple of lovely walks. The mountain top looked very cold. Thank goodness for your puffy coats. Really enjoyed the little video of Bar Harbor...set the scene .
ReplyDeleteLoving the colours of fall. Good to be warm in your car too. Loving the views girls.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting place.Fantastic photos- thanks Heather!
ReplyDeleteYep, the surf looks dangerous! In 2000 we went to camp in the Acadia NP but stayed in The Bass Harbor Country Inn instead. A pretty self-contained room with a view of Bass Harbor from the kitchenette window. It was not far from the 'Thurston's Lobster Pound' (at Bernard) we've told you about where we ate great chowder sitting right over the water. Also went to Bar Harbor which was very touristy and very pretty (as you say) and also with a storm blowing in and obscuring the islands with mist and cloud. Lovely photos of the NP. It's a gorgeous place. Keep warm!
