Conway Scenic Railroad and Kancamagus Hwy

Thursday, 10 October

Another train ride today and luckily good weather again, if a bit overcast. This time it was the Conway Scenic Railroad. We expected some big panoramas but it was a bit like Puffing Billy tootling through the forest - pleasant but not something we’d recommend.

Before the ride we had coffee in a coffee shop that actually had a cappuccino machine. It also had a lot of thermos jugs of flavoured coffees and an assortment of milks. Got chatting to some people who had lived in Sale for a few years. The father worked for Esso. A sister was visiting them from somewhere near Canberra.

Lunched in North Conway after the train and had some nice, rare roast beef ... open sandwich with chips and gravy, but we felt we’d almost had a roast.

The rest of the day took us on our western circuit of the White Mountains and included the most famous leaf-peeping road, the Kancamagus Highway. It was lovely, but had way more tourists than anywhere else we’ve been.

We’ve certainly been lucky with weather and scenery and feel quite proud that we picked the best week to be here. Leaves are starting to fall in some places and there is a long weekend coming up which means many more peepers on these roads. Tomorrow we say goodbye to Bethlehem and head to the coast (which will also be packed with holiday makers on the Columbus Day weekend!).

  1. Gosh Heather - your timing was perfect. The Autumn colours are seriously beautiful and worth coping with the (other) tourists.

  2. Yes, but how HOT is that coffee in a thermos!!! Cannot imagine the depth of humus over hundreds / thousands of years of falling autumn leaves. Some of the scenes are just far too gorgeous to be real.
