Today was my last day in Offenburg. This morning I checked out “The Mount of Olives”, a niche building of a Gothic chapel, built at the beginning of the 16th century and deemed to be Offenburg’s most valuable and probably oldest work of art.
From there it was down the Wenk Stairs to Zwinger Park, which runs along the base of the old town wall. I wanted some bread for tonight’s dinner so I headed in the direction of the bakery but stopped on the way because there’s a nice looking cafe I have never tried.
I decided to have a last day cuppa and cake, and what a cake it was. I think it was called a Mango Tango. As I sat at a table in the shade a couple of buskers began playing just opposite, a violinist and an accordionist. They were fantastic and I stayed listening until they packed up. I gave them a pretty good tip as they really made my morning.
Home again to reorganise my case for tomorrow’s departure. Had a bit of a panic when checking my train ticket as I didn’t think the second train was stopping at Stuttgart, but finally realised it was Stuttgart-Untertürkheim so I think I’m OK.
For my last visit to the Eis cafe I ordered the plain ice cream and a latte. I told the friendly waiter it was my last day and soon after a young waitress brought out a giant strawberry-laden ice cream and told me it was a gift! I did my best but there was no way I could get through it all, though I made sure I had all the lovely strawberries. I don’t think I’ll be able to eat ice cream for the next 6 months! It’s nearly 8 o’clock and I’m still not hungry but I was going to finish a few things off before I leave. Might be packing some leftovers to take to Kirchheim.
Wow that's a sundae and a half! Lucky you with musical accompaniment for your food.A lovely town!
ReplyDeletestrewth Rutts youve almost overdosed on ice cream. I had a lovely long chat with Kaz last night and we agreed the ice cream dishes have been very entertaining. So off again on your adventures and now for some familiar faces. Safe travels.
ReplyDeleteThe Mount of Olives is really interesting Heather. The village in the background is lovely. Is it Offenburg? Do you know the story depicted? I like the sleepy people in the foreground, and the two-headed soldier. 😉 Very pretty park and gardens; they do them well. Nice looking Cafe and the buskers are lovely - thanks for the little bit of music. The Eis Cafe people will miss you. Your icecream gift was well earned, and very nice of them! Safe travels. x
ReplyDeleteSo you eventually found a shady park, Heather! I noted that the daytime patrons at the café were of a certain age! A most pleasant town to explore and relax in during your two weeks of “immersion.” And there is more to come. Amuse-toi.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely stay you had. Enjoy the next section.
ReplyDeleteWe are in virtual lockdown here today with the Italian President, King of Spain and King of Portugal visiting- they could have chosen a different week. But we are enjoying the "antics" of the local police trying to organise traffic from our balcony.
What a lovey way to round out your visit to Offenburg. Enjoy the next leg of your journey. Photos are great. Jennyxx
ReplyDeleteOh Rutts how sweet of the cafe people and so well deserved! Memorable! Enjoy the next leg of your exciting tour of Europe!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a joy following you thus far.
