Saturday, 24 June. Offenburg

After a morning of supermarket, a nice call from Alex and not much else, the afternoon took an unexpected turn.

I was on my way to the park when I came upon Offenburg’s International Festival in the Market Square. There were people everywhere and food stalls from many different countries as well as a stage with performances from all over. Obviously I skipped the park, found a place to sit and watched the show.

Most of the countries I recognised would have been ones with immigrants or refugees who have found their way here. It was great to see so many families enjoying the day and the variety of food.

There were local dance groups and singers as well as a few from South America. I smiled at the number of people on their feet with cameras coming out when the little ballet girls performed. Lots of proud parents and grandparents.

The festival continues tomorrow but I’ve booked a bus ticket to Lahr so I’ll probably miss it, unless they’re still going when I get back. Saw plenty today though. Fingers crossed that the bus shows up for my return trip as the station is at least a half hour walk from the town centre and it’s going to be hot again.

  2. Hi Rutts, have now caught up as at Jonathan's so fast reliable internet. Yes this hot weather is a bit much. Like you its 27 and doesn't cool down much. No humidity but a bit sweaty nevertheless. Well done getting around on public transport and seeing new and interesting places. I'm most impressed with Jonathan's home and have settled in. I've made sure my camper is all locked up, crime is a bit of an issue it appears!!!

  3. Lucky timing Heather! It looks like fun and I'm glad you didn't miss it. Some of those little ballerinas don't look as thrilled about it as their parents and grandparents clearly are! I like the video; they're obviously having fun! No icecream???

  4. What a fun surprise to stumble upon such a colourful festival. Multiculturalism being celebrated. A bit different from the cosy Poowong Pub where we lunched today.
